Regulatory Bodies:
Bluefin tuna regulations are overseen by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Management Division under NOAA. These bodies manage the sustainability of bluefin and other migratory species.
General Regulations:
Anglers need an HMS Angling Permit or HMS Charter/Headboat Permit.
Fishing must be done with rod and reel or handline. Nets or other gear types are prohibited for tuna.
Size and Bag Limits:
27 to less than 47 inches: 2 fish/day (private vessels), 3 fish/day (charters).
47 to less than 73 inches: 1 fish/day.
73 inches or greater: Closed for recreational fishing.
Seasonal Restrictions:
Bluefin tuna season is open for fish under 73 inches, typically running from June to November. Larger tuna fishing remains closed for recreational anglers.

Bluefin tuna are classified into size categories:
School: 27 to less than 47 inches.
Large School: 47 to less than 59 inches.
Medium: 59 to less than 73 inches.
Large Medium and Giant: 73 inches or greater.
Retention Limits:
School/Large School/Medium: 1 to 3 fish per day, depending on permit type.
Giant (73+ inches): Retention is prohibited for recreational anglers.
